Breaking Barriers: How Digital Skills Open New Doors for Women Survivors

Rebuilding takes time, courage, and tools that empower real change. One of the most powerful tools is digital skills. Why Digital Literacy Is a Lifeline for Survivors
In today’s economy, nearly every job requires some level of digital competency. According to the National Skills Coalition, 92 percent of jobs require digital skills, yet one in three workers lack the foundational knowledge needed to succeed.
For women survivors, digital skills are not just about getting a job. They are about regaining control. Learning how to use email, access telehealth, build a résumé, or promote a business online can restore confidence and provide a crucial connection to resources and support networks.

The Path to Financial Independence
Economic control is one of the biggest predictors of whether a survivor will be able to permanently leave an abusive situation. Digital skills unlock access to remote work, freelance platforms, online business creation, and job markets that were previously out of reach.
With access to online income opportunities such as virtual assistant work, Etsy stores, or web development, survivors can earn money on their own terms. This flexibility is critical for those managing trauma recovery, parenting, or relocation.
Accessible Learning: Free Tools and Training
The good news is you don’t need a degree to develop life-changing digital skills. Many free or low-cost resources exist to help women build confidence in areas like digital marketing, graphic design, coding, and more:
- Google Digital Garage – Free courses on marketing, career development, and tech skills
- Coursera – Offers scholarships and free content from top universities
- FutureLearn – Short courses on business, entrepreneurship, and communication
- Canva Design School – Easy tutorials on creating social content and branding
- SheCodes – Women-focused coding bootcamps with scholarship opportunities
Encouraging survivors to take the first step is often the hardest part. Having a support system and safe environment to learn makes a significant difference.
